Special Olympics Vancouver

We are happy to announce that Special Olympics Vancouver has joined the Grandview Skating Club.

Both organizations are thrilled to be working together as of September 2020! Special Olympics is well matched to GSC’s mission for athletes to “achieve their potential in a fun, supportive community”.

What is Special Olympics BC?

Special Olympics BC is dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities through the power and joy of sport. In 55 communities around the province, providing year-round training and competitive opportunities in 18 different sports to more than 5,200 athletes of all ages and a wide range of abilities, thanks to the dedicated efforts of over 4,300 volunteers. Special Olympics BC sport training and youth programs give athletes the chance to gain skills and improve their health, while enjoying training that could take them to competitions at local, regional, national, and international levels. The benefits from Special Olympics BC programs go well beyond the basics; athletes experience joy and acceptance, cultivate friendships and self-confidence, and feel empowered to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. They open hearts and minds to the abilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities, and they create inclusive communities.

One of the sports offered is skating and is run through the Special Olympics Vancouver Skating program, which offers learn to skate and competitive programs for athletes with intellectual disabilities from Vancouver. The athletes range from learning to conquer the fear of stepping on the ice, to staying active for life, to representing BC and Canada Nationally and Internationally. The program is run and coached by volunteers and is open to any athlete with an intellectual disability.
