CANSkate

CANSkate is Skate Canada’s flagship learn-to-skate program, designed for skaters of all ages. When you sign up for CANSkate you will be in a program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development.

Note: Due to COVID-19 health protocols, skaters enrolled in Canskate must be able to get up on their own when they fall.

CANPower Skate

An excellent complement for athletes playing on hockey or ringette teams.The dynamic program is taught by Skate Canada certified CANPower instructors.

CanPowerSkate is geared to skaters aged approximately six or older who already have basic forward and backward skating skills (they must be able to skate the length of the rink using alternate strides) and are able to stop on command without use of the boards.

Full hockey equipment is required. Hockey sticks will sometimes be used, but no shooting or passing of pucks.

STAR 1

The STAR 1 program  is a bridge between CANSkate and the STARSkate program. STAR 1 skaters will work in smaller groups with a professional coach and learn figure skating skills such as jumps, edges, spirals, spins, turns and ice dances.

Classes are offered in 90 minute sessions which includes off- ice training to develop cardio fitness, flexibility, strength, control and reduce risk of injury on ice.  Entry to this program is by invitation only through the CANSkate program, so ask the skating director if you are interested.

STAR 2 – Gold 

A great program for skaters wishing to further develop fundamental figure skating skills such as jumps, spins, edges, speed and musicality while building strength, flexibility and endurance.

STAR 2 – 4

Please find below a few details to review before registering for STAR 2 – 4 lessons:

  • Skaters registering for STAR 2 for the first time must have completed and passed STAR 1 and have approval from one of the Grandview coaches
  • It is strongly recommended that skaters register for a minimum of two Freeskate Group session and a Patterns, Edges and Elements session
  • Star 2 Freeskate lessons are conducted in small groups and will work on jumps, spins and other skating elements
  • Star 2 – 4 Enrichment is a whole group lesson where skaters work on speed and skills in stroking
  • Star 2 – 4 Patterns are for dance and skills lessons and practice
  • Star 2 – 4 Edges and Elements is a 15 minute group session. Coaching fees are included
  • Star 2 – 4 Off-Ice conditioning is a “dry land” class that works on strength, flexibility and skating technique and is included in Monday Freeskate sessions
  • The cost of all STAR 2 – 4 programs includes ice time and group coaching

STAR 5 + Up

Before registering for STAR 5, you must have approval from a Grandview Club coach. 

  • It is strongly recommended that skaters register for a minimum of two Freeskate Group session and a Patterns, Edges and Elements session and participate in Off Ice training.
  • Freeskate lessons are private lessons and will work on jumps, spins and other skating elements.   
  • Enrichment is a whole group lesson where skaters work on speed and skills in stroking.
  • Patterns are for dance and skills lessons and practice. Partnering for dance is available on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Pattern lessons may be conducted in a semi-private format.
  • Edges and Elements is a 15 minute group session. Coaching fees are included. 
  • Off-Ice conditioning is a “dry land” class that works on strength, flexibility and skating technique and is included in both Monday and Wednesday Freeskate sessions. 
  • The cost of all STAR 5-gold programs includes ice time and coaching fees.
